RF Microneedling
Radiofrequency microneedling delivers precision RF energy deep into the dermis to stimulate collagen and elastin production — improving skin laxity, acne scars, pore size, and overall texture. Safe for all skin tones with minimal downtime.
Schedule a ConsultationWhat Is RF Microneedling?
RF microneedling — also called radiofrequency microneedling — is an advanced skin rejuvenation treatment that combines two powerful technologies: the mechanical micro-injury of microneedling and the thermal remodeling of radiofrequency energy. Together, they produce a collagen and elastin response far greater than either treatment can achieve alone.
The device uses a matrix of ultra-fine, insulated microneedles that penetrate to a precisely controlled depth in the dermis. At the target depth, RF energy is discharged from the needle tips, heating the surrounding dermal tissue without damaging the overlying epidermis. This triggers two simultaneous rejuvenation processes: immediate collagen contraction for early tightening, and a prolonged wound-healing cascade that generates new collagen and elastin over the following months.
At Dermatology of Seattle, RF microneedling is performed by or under the direct supervision of our board-certified dermatologists, who determine the optimal needle depth and RF energy levels for your specific skin concerns and anatomy.
How RF Microneedling Works
Microneedle Penetration
The handpiece delivers dozens of fine, coated needles simultaneously into the skin at a precisely set depth — typically 0.5–3.5mm, depending on the treatment area and indication. The needle coating insulates the shaft so RF energy is deposited only at the tip, at the target depth.
Radiofrequency Energy Delivery
At the programmed depth, radiofrequency energy is discharged into the dermis. RF energy generates heat through tissue resistance, raising the local temperature to 60–70°C — the threshold that triggers collagen denaturation and new collagen synthesis.
Immediate Collagen Contraction
Existing collagen fibers contract when heated, producing immediate skin tightening. This is visible within days as the skin looks firmer and more toned.
Progressive Collagen Synthesis
Over the following 3–6 months, fibroblasts respond to the controlled thermal injury by producing abundant new collagen and elastin — the structural proteins responsible for skin firmness, elasticity, and smooth texture.
RF Microneedling vs. Standard Microneedling
Standard Microneedling
- Mechanical micro-injuries only
- Collagen stimulation via wound healing
- Excellent for superficial texture
- Limited effect on deep laxity
- Safe for all skin tones
- Lower cost per session
RF Microneedling
- Micro-injuries + radiofrequency thermal energy
- Greater collagen AND elastin stimulation
- More significant skin tightening
- Effective for laxity and deeper scars
- Safe for all skin tones
- More comprehensive remodeling
Conditions We Treat
RF microneedling is one of the most versatile skin rejuvenation treatments available, addressing a wide spectrum of concerns:
Fine Lines & Wrinkles
RF energy stimulates new collagen to fill in fine surface lines and smooth early to moderate wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.
Skin Laxity
Immediate collagen contraction from RF heat produces early tightening; progressive new collagen formation continues to firm and lift lax skin over months.
Acne Scars
Microneedle punctures and RF energy remodel scar tissue, breaking down fibrous bands and stimulating fresh collagen to fill rolling, boxcar, and ice-pick scars.
Enlarged Pores
Collagen production around pore openings physically tightens and minimizes their appearance — especially effective in the nose and cheek areas.
Stretch Marks
RF microneedling can improve the texture, color, and depth of stretch marks on the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks by stimulating dermal collagen in the affected tissue.
Uneven Texture
The combination of exfoliation from microneedle channels and deep collagen remodeling from RF energy produces a smoother, more uniform skin surface.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
30–60 Minutes Before: Numbing
A thick layer of topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area and left on for 30–60 minutes. This significantly reduces discomfort during the procedure.
The Treatment (30–45 Minutes)
The numbing cream is removed, the skin is cleaned, and a thin layer of saline or conductive gel is applied. The handpiece is passed systematically across the treatment area, delivering controlled RF energy at each pass. Your provider adjusts needle depth and energy based on the area being treated.
Immediately After
The skin will appear red and feel warm — similar to moderate sunburn. Some patients experience mild swelling, particularly around the eyes. Cooling gel or an ice pack can be applied for comfort.
The Next 24–48 Hours
Redness and warmth gradually resolve. Avoid vigorous exercise, saunas, and direct sun exposure. Use only gentle cleanser and SPF 30+ sunscreen. Skip retinoids, acids, and active serums for 3–5 days.
Weeks to Months: The Transformation
Within 2 weeks, initial texture improvement is often visible. Over the following 3–6 months, collagen and elastin continue to build, progressively improving firmness, scar depth, pore size, and overall skin quality.
Safe for All Skin Tones
One significant advantage of RF microneedling over many laser treatments is that radiofrequency energy is not absorbed by melanin. This means there is no risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation from the treatment energy itself — making RF microneedling equally safe and effective for patients of all ethnic backgrounds and Fitzpatrick skin types (I through VI).

Frequently Asked Questions
How many RF microneedling sessions do I need?
A series of 3 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart is the standard recommendation for most patients. Collagen remodeling is a slow biological process — each session builds on the last, and the full benefit of the series continues to develop for 3–6 months after the final treatment. Patients with severe acne scarring or significant skin laxity may benefit from additional sessions. Annual maintenance treatments are popular for sustaining results.
Is RF microneedling painful?
A topical numbing cream is applied 30–60 minutes before treatment, making the procedure much more comfortable than it would be otherwise. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm, prickly pressure — not painful. The RF energy creates a warming sensation in the skin that many patients find tolerable or even pleasant. Sensitivity varies by area; the forehead and nose can be more sensitive. Your provider adjusts energy levels to your comfort.
What is the downtime after RF microneedling?
Most patients experience 24–48 hours of redness and mild swelling — similar in appearance to a moderate sunburn. The skin may feel warm and slightly rough for a day or two. Most people are comfortable returning to work within 1–2 days, especially with mineral-based makeup to cover any residual redness. We recommend avoiding intense exercise, heat exposure, and active skincare ingredients (retinoids, acids) for 48–72 hours post-treatment.
Who is a good candidate for RF microneedling?
RF microneedling is an excellent option for adults experiencing fine lines and early to moderate skin laxity, acne scarring, enlarged pores, uneven texture, or stretch marks. Because the RF energy is not absorbed by melanin (unlike lasers), the treatment is safe and equally effective for all skin tones — Fitzpatrick I through VI. It is not suitable during pregnancy, for patients with active skin infections in the treatment area, or those with certain implanted medical devices.
How is RF microneedling different from regular microneedling?
Standard microneedling creates micro-injuries in the skin with tiny needles, stimulating a wound-healing response and collagen production. RF microneedling does the same — but adds radiofrequency energy delivered directly through the needle tips deep into the dermis. This RF energy heats the dermal tissue, causing immediate collagen contraction and triggering a more profound secondary collagen synthesis response. The result is more significant skin tightening, improved laxity, and deeper remodeling than microneedling alone can achieve.
When will I see results from RF microneedling?
Many patients notice an initial improvement in skin texture and brightness within 1–2 weeks as post-treatment healing completes. However, the most significant results — particularly for laxity, acne scars, and pore size — develop over 3–6 months as new collagen and elastin continue to form and mature. Patience is key: the biological process of collagen synthesis takes time, and your skin continues to improve for months after your last session.
