Schedule a ConsultationWhat Is Juvederm?
Juvederm is the world's leading line of FDA-approved hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers, manufactured by Allergan Aesthetics. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the body — particularly in the skin — where it plays a key role in retaining moisture and maintaining volume.
As we age, we lose hyaluronic acid, collagen, and fat from the face, resulting in hollowed cheeks, deepened folds, thinner lips, and a generally sunken or tired appearance. Juvederm fillers replenish this lost volume immediately — providing results you can see the moment you look in the mirror.
At Dermatology of Seattle, all filler injections are performed by board-certified dermatologists with expert knowledge of facial anatomy, ensuring precise placement and natural-looking enhancement at both our Burien and Bellevue locations.
How Do Hyaluronic Acid Fillers Work?
Hyaluronic acid has a remarkable ability to attract and bind water molecules — up to 1,000 times its own weight in water. When injected into the skin, HA filler integrates with the surrounding tissue, drawing in moisture and physically adding volume to the treated area.
Over time, naturally occurring enzymes in the body gradually break down the HA gel — which is why results are long-lasting but not permanent. This biodegradability is also what makes hyaluronidase reversal possible: the enzyme that breaks down filler can be administered in higher concentrations to rapidly dissolve it if needed.
All Juvederm products also contain 0.3% lidocaine, a local anesthetic, mixed directly into the gel — significantly reducing discomfort during and after injection.
The Juvederm Product Line
Juvederm is not a single product — it's a family of fillers, each engineered with a specific gel consistency and cross-linking technology for a particular area and purpose. Using the right product in the right location is essential for safe, natural results.
Juvederm Voluma XC
The thickest Juvederm formulation, Voluma is designed to restore age-related volume loss in the cheeks and midface. It creates a subtle lift that can take years off your appearance.
Juvederm Vollure XC
Vollure uses Vycross technology for a smooth, adaptable gel that softens moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles without looking overdone.
Juvederm Volbella XC
The softest, most subtle Juvederm filler — ideal for adding a touch of definition and hydration to the lips and smoothing fine vertical lip lines without dramatic volume.
Juvederm Ultra XC
A versatile lip filler that provides more noticeable volume enhancement for patients seeking fuller lips. Also used for smile lines and oral commissures.
Treatment Areas
Juvederm fillers can address virtually any area of the face where volume loss or structural changes are affecting your appearance:
- Lips — definition, hydration, and volume
- Cheeks and midface — restoring youthful fullness
- Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
- Marionette lines (corners of mouth to chin)
- Under-eye hollows (tear trough)
- Jawline definition and contouring
- Chin projection and symmetry
- Temples — restoring hollowed appearance
What to Expect During Treatment
Your Juvederm appointment is straightforward and typically completed within 30–60 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated:
Consultation & Facial Analysis
Your dermatologist performs a thorough facial assessment, reviews your concerns and goals, and recommends the appropriate Juvederm product(s) and injection technique. A clear cost estimate is provided before proceeding.
Numbing
Topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment areas and allowed to take effect for 20–30 minutes. For lip treatments, a dental block nerve injection can be offered for maximum comfort.
Injection
Using a fine needle or flexible cannula (depending on the area), your dermatologist precisely places filler in the appropriate tissue plane. Massaging helps shape and smooth the product.
Aftercare
Expect some swelling and possible bruising for 2–5 days, most notable in the lips. Avoid intense exercise, heat exposure, and alcohol for 24 hours. Final results are best assessed at 2 weeks post-treatment.
Results & Longevity
One of the most satisfying aspects of Juvederm is that results are visible immediately. Unlike treatments that build over months, you leave your appointment looking refreshed and revitalized.
- Immediately: visible volume and smoothing (with initial swelling)
- Days 2–3: peak swelling resolves, true result begins to emerge
- Week 2: swelling and any bruising fully resolved — final result
- Months 6–12: lips gradually return toward baseline; touch-ups available
- Year 1–2: cheek and facial volume filler slowly metabolized

Frequently Asked Questions
How is Juvederm different from Botox?
Botox and Juvederm work in completely different ways. Botox is a neuromodulator that relaxes muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles caused by movement. Juvederm is a dermal filler that physically adds volume to the face — plumping lips, restoring cheek fullness, and softening deep folds. Many patients benefit from both treatments used in combination for comprehensive rejuvenation.
Does getting filler hurt?
Juvederm products contain lidocaine — a local anesthetic — built directly into the formula, which significantly reduces discomfort during injection. We also apply a topical numbing cream before treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure or a brief sting. The lips are the most sensitive area; we take extra care to ensure comfort there.
How long does Juvederm last?
Longevity varies by product and location. Juvederm Voluma in the cheeks can last up to 2 years. Vollure for nasolabial folds lasts 12–18 months. Volbella and Ultra in the lips typically last 12 months. Results depend on your metabolism, the amount used, and the specific area treated. Areas with more movement (like lips) metabolize filler more quickly.
Can filler be reversed if I don't like the results?
Yes — this is one of the major advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm. If you are unhappy with your results or experience a complication, hyaluronidase (an enzyme) can be injected to rapidly dissolve the hyaluronic acid filler. This is one reason we only use HA-based fillers and why dermatologist-performed treatments offer an important safety advantage.
How much swelling or bruising should I expect?
Some degree of swelling and occasional bruising is normal after filler, particularly in the lips. Most swelling resolves within 2–3 days; bruising, if it occurs, typically fades within a week. Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for one week before treatment to minimize bruising risk. Final results are best evaluated at 2 weeks.
Am I a good candidate for Juvederm?
Most healthy adults wanting to restore volume, soften lines, or enhance features are good candidates. Juvederm is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for patients with certain autoimmune conditions or allergies to lidocaine. During your consultation, your dermatologist will review your health history to ensure treatment is right for you.
